Laser Hair Removal - Frequently Asked Questions

    Is laser hair removal safe?
Yes. Laser is non-invasive and non-ionising so therefore cannot cause malignant changes to the skin. Your safety is our number one priority.

It is important that you do not have a sun tan whilst attending for treatment – sun exposure is the single biggest limiting factor for treatment. For more information regarding this please contact us.
    Does laser hair removal hurt?
This is one of our most commonly asked questions!

Laser will hurt a little, but most of our clients experience only slight discomfort with treatment. Laser hair removal feels a little like an elastic band flicking against the skin.

Our inbuilt dynamic cooling device (DCD) helps to keep skin comfortable throughout treatment. We have never been unable to complete treatment due to pain or discomfort!

You should not use a topical analgesic. Oral painkillers can be taken if required, but is rarely necessary.

Can the laser treat all skin types?
The Candela GentleMax Pro has both an Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser built in – these work independently of each other and allow effective hair removal for all skin types.
How do I know that I’m suitable?
Laser hair removal works best on darker hair which contains more melanin. Treatment is not effective on white, grey or very blonde hair as it contains little (or no) melanin. If you’re not sure if laser will be effective for you pop in to see us for a consultation!
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser targets melanin within the hair using a process caused selective phothermolysis to destroy the hair follicle. Please click here for a full explanation.
    Which laser do you use?

We use a Candela GentleMax Pro – please click here for more information.

How many treatments will I need?
The exact number of appointments needed will depend on your own individual treatment aims and hair growth cycle.

On average our clients have 6-8 appointments (6-10 for male clients), spaced at every 8-12 weeks apart. Our clients have a hair free period typically lasting 6-8 weeks between each appointment.
    How long does treatment take?
For facial treatment we generally book out half an hour – whilst the treatment itself can be done in as little as five minutes, this additional time allows us to discuss progress and ensure your comfort. We will reserve more time for body treatments; your therapist will discuss timings with you during your consultation.
    Who can you treat?
Everyone, providing your hair is suitable for treatment! We have clients who see us for aesthetic reasons, as well as those who have a range of medical conditions causing hirsutism and clients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). We treat clients of all genders.
Can I have treatment on the NHS?
We are proud to be an NHS Laser Hair Removal provider for transgender clients for facial and surgical areas – contact us for more information or contact your NHS clinician.
    Do you offer a consultation?
Yes! Our consultations are free of charge and no obligation. You must attend for a consultation at least one week prior to your first treatment. Consultation appointments last approximately one hour.
